I'm a librarian and head of the Open Science Lab (OSL) at the TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology since 2013. Read my daily updates on Open Science and more on Mastodon.
Communicator on all things research data and information infrastructure
I love to discuss these topics. I recently told Wissenschaft im Dialog about why I care so much about these things, why I participated in Forschungsstrom and more. I've been published in Tagesspiegel, Jungle World, LSE Impact Blog and elsewhere, and I've been interviewed by NDR, Nature Index, iRights, Netzpolitik, most recently HAZ, and some German podcasters.
Activist in the field of digital collective memory
I am not a historian. But it is important to me to criticise domination and to question the normality of the nation and nationalism. In my role at the TIB (German National Library of Science and Technology) I have initiated several grant-funded projects exploring wiki-based citizen science in memory culture, like Places of Gestapo Terror and WikiRemembrance.
Facilitator of book sprints and open textbooks
Textbooks should be owned and managed by their authors. This has become beautifully easy in our digital day and age! In my role at the TIB, I managed several third-party funded open textbook projects and handbook projects, often in the form of book sprints. Read more about NextGen Books at the TIB and book sprints in a recent blog post of mine.
Creator of barcamps, hackathons and other participatory formats
Somehow related to the above, I co-created the BibCamp event series in Germany (2008), the Open Science Barcamp (2015) and later consulted with BiblioCon, Europe's largest library conference, leading to the successful "Hands-On Labs" session format within BiblioCon (2017). I'm a frequent presenter of participatory workshops at re:publica, Zugang gestalten and NFDI4Culture events. You might also find me moderating an engaging panel discussion with Bénédicte Savoy.
Advisor and reviewer for research organizations
I work as a reviewer for the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the VolkswagenStiftung, the NWO (Dutch Research Council) and several others. I'm on the editorial board of the book series Medien in der Wissenschaft, and I'm an advisor to the ISCC Foundation. Being a jury member of the Enter-Award is one of the fun things I also do.
Before starting the Open Science Lab
A social scientist by training, I completed a graduate trainee program in academic libraries (Bibliotheksreferendariat) 2005-2007 at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. I joined the TIB in 2008 and worked as a subject specialist for five years before starting the Open Science Lab.
